The internal combustion engine has been around for more than 100 years and is probably here to stay for many more years. But as global air polution and the end of oil are becoming major threats, new propulsion solutions are evolving. 

 

Electrification is a reality as most car makers offer mild, full hybrids or electric vehicles in their portfolio. Challenges remain the high cost and space requirements for batteries and suitable range extension for long distances.

Fuel cell technology for mass market is still a decade away due to high costs and the lack of infrastructure.
